Snowstorms and Air Conditioners

March 17, 2016

We haven’t completely made it through winter in Haines City just yet. Mother Nature has given us a few nice days, but she’s always prepared to remind us that she’s the boss. So when she does finally let up and it starts to warm up, read below so you won’t want to have to unexpectedly call us for out for air conditioner service.

Heavy snowfall could bury your air conditioner in the snow, hurting its performance when the temperatures finally warm up for the season. Not to mention it can keep a high-efficiency system from performing as such. The situation could become an even greater problem too if you don’t plan for it with an annual air conditioner service appointment.

There are preparations you can do as a homeowner to help your air conditioner operate properly even though snow has fallen or could fall in the upcoming days and weeks.

  1. Maintain a 3-foot/1-meter clearance around your air conditioner. Walk around the area routinely to make sure that it stays clear and that there are no snow drifts or piles of debris that may have piled up during the winter.
  2. Contrary to what you may think, putting a cover over your air conditioner may end up doing more damage than you’d expect. A covered air conditioner may be inviting for rodents looking for shelter from the weather and start to call it home, possibly meaning damage to the system as they roam about.

While the weather in Haines City will most likely go up and down over the last few days of cold weather, you can’t count out the probability of weather that can change the performance of your air conditioner. At Air Commander's Heating & Air Conditioning Co. in Haines City, we are always available to check any areas around your home or answer any of your questions, whether they’re about air conditioner service or buying a new system.
